Step 12 — Achieving Colour Range and Depth
A beginner’s first few dyebaths often produce a fairly narrow range — various shades of yellow, tan, and soft orange. This note explains the strategies dyers use to build a genuinely broad palette: deeper colour, wider hues, and more nuanced results from the same dye sources.
Depth of Shade
Depth of shade refers to how saturated and intense a colour is. The main variables are:
Dye concentration. More dye material relative to fibre weight (higher % WOF) produces deeper colour, up to the point where the fibre is saturated. Doubling your dye quantity doesn’t always double the depth — results tend to plateau, especially at high concentrations.
Mordant choice. Alum typically gives the clearest, truest version of a colour. Iron deepens it (see Step 11 — Colour Modifiers and Afterbaths). Tannin pre-treatment on cellulose fibres enables fuller take-up (see Step 09 — Iron, Tannins, and Mineral Dyes).
Dyeing time and temperature. Longer, hotter dyebaths generally produce deeper colour on protein fibres, up to the point of fibre stress. A 90-minute simmer will be darker than a 30-minute one, all else being equal.
Multiple dyebaths. Re-entering already-dyed fibre into a fresh dyebath — called successive dyeing — builds depth gradually. This is how dyers achieve very dark, rich shades without overloading a single bath.
Expanding the Hue Range
Over-Dyeing
Over-dyeing means dyeing fibre that already carries colour with a second, different dye. Yellow fibre dyed with indigo (blue) becomes green. Orange fibre over-dyed with logwood (purple) becomes a rich brown. A pale pink shifted into a weld bath becomes a warm apricot. The possibilities multiply quickly.
Over-dyeing works best when the first colour is fully fixed and the fibre has been re-scoured lightly. If the first dye is still partially unfixed, it can shift unpredictably in the second bath.
Resist Dyeing
Resist techniques — tying, clamping, waxing, or stitching fabric before dyeing — prevent dye from reaching certain areas, creating pattern. The resisted areas remain undyed (or retain a previous colour), while exposed areas take the new dye. This is the foundation of tie-dye, batik, and shibori, all of which work equally well with natural dyes. Full detail is in Step 17 — Resist Dyeing Techniques.
Combining Eco Printing with Dyeing
Eco-printed fabric can be over-dyed in a conventional dyebath to add a background colour while the eco-printed impressions remain visible beneath — or the prints are altered by the second dye, creating layered complexity. This combination technique is a rich area for experimentation once you’re comfortable with both processes separately.
Neutrals, Greys, and Blacks
True black from natural dyes is challenging. The most reliable approach is iron + tannin: tannin-mordant the fibre (oak galls are most effective), then apply an iron afterbath (or logwood + iron). The result is a warm to cool charcoal-black rather than a pure optical black, but it’s genuinely dark and reasonably lightfast.
Greys come from logwood with iron, from iron alone on tannin-treated cotton, or from weak iron modifications on any yellow-base dye.
Warm tans and naturals are almost effortless — undyed fibre that has simply been mordanted with alum and run through a plain tannin bath will take on a creamy or biscuit tone that has its own quiet beauty.
